Nicely done Josh!!๐๐ผ๐๐ผ I completely agree with everything you said! For example my cousins getting so upset that TikTok is going to be banned and made them hate Trump even more! One of them just turned 18 and canโt wait to vote against him!!
Next, I think you should check out Smule Sing!! Iโve been on it since it was created and it just keeps blooming and blooming. I have friends that have been signed to music contracts, acting gigs, music awards!! But I would like to know YOUR pros and cons of the app. If you have to download it, find me๐ iLeslieGray ๐๐ผ๐๐ผ
Thanks Leslie! Iโll check it out. Smule got started at Stanford while I was there and itโs smart to see them branching out from just being nerdy audio creation tools into being a performance and collaboration platform too! I want to see your videos!
this is super accurate, Josh! but i'd say instagram reels might not be that buried from the looks of it. it does have other multiple entry points (like you'd enter IGTV through clicking a normal feed post) and that would start the endless scroll down just like tiktok. just wanted to mention that, btw love your newsletter ๐๐
I had actually joked on my FB feed a while back that Trump banning TikTok would be a delightfully powerful get-out-the-vote-drive for Gen Z. Which is why I assume(d) he'd never go through with it.
But of course, he's always been more impetuous than calculating, so yeah.
And no matter how this actually shakes out in the end, I think it's surprisingly net positive for society.
- Microsoft may gain some much-needed 'social juice', helping to balance multiple playing fields.
- Other "Big Tech" companies will get some heat taken off of them.
- And then there's the aforementioned likely boost in quantity/diversity of American voters.
And in the end, the kids'll be alright anyway. Sure, some might have be pretty painfully affected in the short term if TikTok *actually* gets banned (which I still doubt). But they'll soon find a way to share their talents (or lack thereof) in other ways, in other places. The demand -- especially in these stay-at-home times -- isn't going anywhere but up.
I agree that the most talented and famous will find other apps but those just starting to get momentum will be crushed and may have no other channel of reaching those fans
I've always said unless these apps have a platform behind them they are in essence like a "nightclub". Popular today gone tomorrow and the best innovators leverage the success and sequence with a product platform to add more value to the initial app for big-time franchise value
They absolutely need a sharing network, not just creation tool, and have to constantly iterate with filters powerful enough to spawn their own meme templates. Combined with content moderation, thatโs a lot to ask of small startups
Still trying to figure out why reels is ranked #2 I think it'll flop... assuming they'll merge two into one (Instagram + reels). The EXPLORE page wouldn't help to get content pushed out... they'll need to overhaul the explore page by adding trends/hashtags. They'll also need to add something similar to FYP.
They weak willed approach to puke he to increasingly take over Explore, which already gets 500M+ monthly visitors. But unless itโs part of the default homepage like Stories, users wonโt care enough about going viral on Reels to put in the work

Thanks! Theyโve toyed with more entry points like the profile but I think it needs exposure on the homepage
